The Environment

We have a serious commitment to environmental issues including the observation of seasonal wildlife factors such as avoiding bird nesting periods and checking for bat colonies in hollow tree branches etc.

It is our policy to retain fallen tree trunks where possible. Remember that decaying fallen or standing trees may be host to beetles and other invertibrates that have lived in these specialised ecosystems for decades. Some species will have colonised an area for centuries through specific wildlife corridors, and the removal of that last old tree trunk could be the end of a species. The retention of a large log, however, can be the ideal habitat for various creatures until another tree becomes over mature to continue the cycle.

Sometimes nature needs a helping hand to comply with the modern attitude to risk assessment and liability on safety matters. A tall dead tree becomes a serious hazard to the public if left untouched, but once reduced to a safe level, possibly covered in ivy, it will quickly become a home to all kinds of wildlife.

Other ways to help the environment include the use of biodegradeable oils and the responsible disposal of waste products with the recycling of materials where possible. Irresponsible soil contamination and air and water pollution seems to be a way of life these days, but we know we can do something to help, however small.
